TechCrunch reports that the fight against click fraud is not hopeless.

The latest news out from Click Forensics's click fraud index indicates that click fraud declined in the first quarter of the year.

Click fraud refers to the situation where web based adverts are clicked on by automated processes or malicious users. The motivation can often be benign but is often associated with people trying to deplete a competitors advertising account.

Click fraud was a growing problem throughout 2007, with tracked fraud level rising from 14.8 percent of clicks in the first quarter to 28.3 percent in the fourth quarter.

The latest results show that the levels of click fraud have decreased, albeit by a modest half of a percent.

The suggestion is that the leading advertising platform providers, Google and Yahoo are finally filtering out more of the click fraud. Good news for online advertisers.
